Chaplain’s Chat: New year, new me

Are you someone who likes to make new year’s resolutions? I used to, but nowadays not so much. I think it’s because I’m sick of feeling guilty and deflated after failing to keep them.

One year I planned to avoid eating junk food for the year, however within the first week, I opened the pantry door and spied an unopened Twisties chips packet. So much for my resolution!

In my defence, with four children in the house, finding an unopened chips packet is miraculous. And who can resist the red and gold tin-foil wrapped goodness that is Twisties?

This was the start of me not making new year’s plans …

Another reason why some people don’t like making new year’s resolutions is because we read in the Bible that God’s mercies are new every morning.

The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness (Lamentations 3:23).

This means that when we have a bad day, because of Christ and His eternal never-ending love, we can start fresh every day. Every sunrise in Christ means new mercies and grace!

So, if you need to eat healthier, restore a relationship, hit the weights, or be more disciplined in your saving, every day is a new day and a new opportunity to experience new life.

It doesn’t need to be 1 January to commence your plan to start again! Jesus shows us a new way, a better way, every day.

When we slip up, He won’t. When our energy runs dry, His doesn’t. When our love goes cold, His cannot. Every day we can simply come to Him, confess our failings and shortcomings, and receive limitless forgiveness and grace to start again.

So, make plans for 2024! Just remember that if you fail, you can always start again in Jesus. All you need to do is pray in faith to Him.

God bless you as you commence another year of exciting possibilities. I’m so grateful to be sharing this ministry with you all.
