Chaplain’s Chat: Hope for the future
“Futurologists” have long attempted to predict what life has in store for us. In the 1660s, Robert Boyle made a prediction that, in the future, diseases would be cured at a distance or at least by transplantation. He was right!
Not all predictions are accurate though. In 1962, Decca Recording Company rejected the Beatles, stating, “We don’t like their sound, and guitar music is on the way out.” The Beatles ended up being one of the greatest bands of all time!
There are certain things about the future that we don’t know, however, there are important
things we are aware of that will make a real difference to our lives. The Easter story
communicates that when it comes to eternal life and what happens when we die, we can
experience peace and hope because Jesus experienced death but came alive again. He
even predicted that this would happen three times!
When He surrendered Himself onto a wooden cross on Good Friday, He did that for you and
for me, and His resurrection signals His victory over sin and death. Then, when the disciples
encountered the risen Jesus (John 20:24-29), their lives were transformed. They moved
from fear to faith, from alarm to action, and from despair to hope because they witnessed that this life is not the end. There is life beyond the grave.
The Good News of Easter is that as Jesus was raised from the dead, so in Christ you will be raised with Him (see 1 Corinthians 15) when we trust in Jesus.
So, while we don’t know what our future holds, in Jesus, we know who holds our future.
