Speaking in the lead up to International Day of People with Disability, Carinity Bunderra Client Services Coordinator Kerry White says social inclusion is paramount to making people feel a part of the community they live in.

“Carinity gives our people their own life outside of home and family. This gives them a sense of individuality, purpose and pleasure while making new friends and creating new opportunities,” Kerry says.

Shane Smith of Toogoolawah has been a Carinity Our House client for almost a decade.

The confidence and skills Shane has developed has helped to create opportunities such as a volunteering role at the Gatton Transport Museum and obtaining his learner’s license to drive trucks.

Completing life-skills courses also empowered Shane to form a catering group, dubbed the Lunch ‘n’ Kings, which published their own cookbook.

“Our House has supported me to learn everyday life skills which has assisted me with my independence. I have also learned social skills. I’ve come along way with my confidence over the years,” Shane says.
