I remember walking into prison for the first time – not as an inmate, but as a chaplain sharing
hope and forgiveness at a church service. I will never forget the experience of speaking
to around 50 people who felt forgotten by society.
The razor wire and bars were a constant reminder of the prisoners’ past mistakes, as was the
isolation. Many had been abandoned by their family and friends. For some, a prison chaplain wasthe only person who would sit with them, listen without judgement, and remind them that theyare not beyond grace. That day I spoke about Jesus and His love for each person, but I spent a lot of time listening to stories and praying with people too. It was a very powerful experience.
The Inside Out Prison Chaplaincy (IOPC) ministry has existed for over 50 years, walking with realpeople behind bars in an intentionally pastoral way. Our chaplains witness lives being quietlytransformed, hardened hearts soften, and despair giving way to hope. We see real people beginto believe that, despite their past, their story is not over. That’s the power of prison chaplaincy – living out Jesus’ words in Matthew 25:40:
The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
Our IOPC chaplains bring hope and light, as do our chaplains in Carinity schools, aged care
homes, and those who visit sick people in our state’s hospitals. Our team plays a vital role
in being available to spend time with people who need a listening ear.

generosity enables ongoing visits, pastoral care, and spiritual support for real people behind bars, in aged care homes, schools and hospitals at a time when it is most needed.
